National Security

National Security:   Obvious applications of accelerator technology for national security involve sources of neutrons and gamma rays for radiography and for detection of special nuclear materials and explosives.  A more subtle application involves development of an intrusion detector based on rf techiques (US Patents 7,095,326 and 7,397,377).  NMR and/or MRI techniques can be employed to  detect explosives and land mines.   Techniques used to create MR images can also be applied to creating images from a variety of radiofrequency measurements.  Extremely high frequency (EHF or Terahertz) radiowaves have recently been employed by the Transportation Security Agency (TSA) to screen airline passengers.  Another application of high power, high frequency radiowaves is in non-lethal crowd control.
